Builders urged to give site cabins a green makeover

Builders in England have been urged to give their site cabins a green makeover as part of an effort to significantly cut the industry's CO2 emissions and energy costs.

A new plan from the Carbon Trust and the Strategic Forum for Construction aims to reduce the sector's emissions by 750,000 tonnes year and save building firms around £180 million in annual electricity and water bills.

The organisations said site cabins are a major source of CO2 and waste energy because they tend to be poorly insulated and lack power and heating controls.

Halving the carbon emissions and electricity use of these structures would save around 200,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, while cutting energy costs by £45 million, they added.

David Vincent, the Carbon Trust's director of projects, said: "As much as 25 per cent of the carbon reduction target can be achieved - and tens of millions of pounds saved - by putting an end to the wasted heat and lighting from thousands of site offices across the country."

The trust recently launched a guide to help businesses monitor their CO2 output so they can draw up long-term plans for reducing emissions.
