Comparison service welcomes smart meters move

02/07/09
Comparison services moneysupermarket.com has welcomed an announcement from British Gas that will see the company create 2,600 green jobs in order to roll out smart meter technology to homes.

The site said the introduction of smart meters will "put an end" to estimated bills and meter readings, helping to ensure home owners do not overpay or find themselves in debt with their energy supplier ever again.

Furthermore, the site said the recruitment of the British Gas "green army" to install the meters will provide households with a source of advice on saving money and cutting their fuel costs.

Although the rollout of the green army is not expected to start until 2012 and it could be another decade before smart meters are widespread, moneysupermarket.com said home owners can take steps now to reduce their energy outgoings.

One way to save is switching to an online tariff with paperless billing, it said.

Home owners can also cut up their energy costs by around 15 per cent by installing ten inches of loft insulation, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
