Creating green houses easier than ever, says energy writer

22/06/09
It has "never been easier" to cut carbon emissions and make homes greener places by making improvements to energy efficiency and adopting alternative forms of power generation, an energy specialist has said.

Author Dave Sabri wrote on 2Articles that the cost, time and effort involved in going green is falling while the options for saving energy are growing wider.

He said 60% of individuals' carbon emissions currently come from their property's boiler. Installing an energy efficient model can cut a CO2 footprint by 875g a year, saving around £170 on annual fuel bills.

Adding heating controls like timers and individual thermostats for radiators could cut another £105 a year off bills and save a combined 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 across the UK, Mr. Sabri added.

Other home improvements, such as installing loft and cavity wall insulation, can help to further reduce heat loss, he noted.

For those looking to adopt renewable power sources, Mr. Sabri recommended solar panels, which are a zero-carbon technology that can cut heating bills in half.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, home owners should consider replacing a boiler if it is more than 15 years old.
