A terraced house in Dartford has become a showcase for how
builders can use innovative materials and technologies to improve the
energy efficiency and environmental performance of existing
residential property.
The house on Willow Road has been overhauled by architect PRP in cooperation with Dartford Borough Council and Connaught Partnerships as part of the Technology Strategy Board's Retrofit for the Future competition.
As part of the work, it received triple-glazed windows and doors, alongside new insulated render.
The Energy Performance Rating of the building was brought up to the A grade, while there has also been a significant reduction in its CO2 emissions and energy consumption.
PRP said that this type of retrofitting project will become increasingly important, as carbon output from domestic property will have to be cut by 33 per cent over the next decade if the government is to meet its target of reducing CO2 production by 80 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050.
Under the Retrofit for the Future programme, 87 projects will receive £13.5 million to develop "demonstrator" houses this year showcasing green
home improvements.
