A micro-Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit that heats water and generates electricity for the home has won Sustainability Now's Green Innovation Award.
The Baxi Ecogen unit looks and acts like a standard wall-mounted gas boiler, providing central heating and hot water.
However, it also uses a helium-powered engine to generate up to 1Kw of electricity, enough to power ten 20-watt light bulbs, a TV, washing machine and computer.
It has a built-in energy meter so
residential property owners can see how much power they are generating and according to the manufacturer, combining electricity generation with heating could save up to £600 on annual fuel bills.
The Baxi Ecogen micro-CHP unit beat eight other products to land the Green Innovation Award.
Sarah Brook, Baxi's group marketing manager, said: "We are delighted to have received this prestigious accolade, especially in the face of such tough competition."
Baxi was founded in 1866.
