Eco-friendly insulation chosen for energy efficiency scheme

25/08/09
A new environmentally-friendly type of insulation could help home owners cut their carbon emissions and their fuel bills, according to Calderdale council.

The Halifax Courier reported that the new product has been developed by insulation firm Knauf and involves Ecose Technology, which is comprised of so-called "rapidly renewable" organic materials.

It is currently being used in a new local government scheme in Calderdale, which offers discounted or free cavity wall and loft insurance to private home owners.

"As well as helping local people save money on their energy bills, this scheme is ... using an environmentally friendly insulation material and also supporting a local employer within the borough," said councillor Ian Cooper, cabinet member for community services in Calderdale.

Loft insulation could lead to an annual saving of £150 per year on energy bills in a gas-heated three-bedroom semi-detached home, according to figures from the Energy Saving Trust.

The environment group noted that installing loft insulation could also lead to an annual saving of 800kg in carbon dioxide emissions.
