It has been claimed low-carbon technologies could replace existing boiler systems in the near future.
The assertion was made by Eric Salomon of EDF's energy services division as the company signed a partnership with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Mr. Salomon said the results of this partnership will help speed up the delivery of low-carbon technology to
residential property in the UK, helping homeowners cut their energy costs and reduce their carbon footprints.
He claimed to be excited about the deal because it will smooth the progress of integrating new greener technologies in the home, which "could see current household boiler systems eventually replaced by low-carbon technologies like heat pumps in the same way that DVDs have replaced videos".
According to Paul Elkins, professor of energy and environment policy at King's College London, homeowners will need to use a wide and varied range of low-carbon energy technologies in order to reduce their carbon emissions.
