Energy efficiency of residential property 'starts at insulation'

Improving energy efficiency in the home can be achieved with small steps, while one of the best ways to lower home heating bills and emissions is to install insulation, a residential property expert advises.

Adding insulation to walls and ceilings is a task that many home owners might want to do themselves, however, Alex Goddard, curator at the Eco Home Exhibition, also points to double and triple glazing as another way to significantly boost energy efficiency.

With such a large task, Britons could be best asking local tradesmen found through Rated People to fit new windows, especially because getting this wrong could result in expensive damage and the fittings not doing their job properly.

"It has to be well fitted because if it is draughty around the edges then that's no good," she asserts.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, installing double glazing could save up to £135 a year on home heating bills, while loft insulation fitted in a home with no such protection could save £150 a year.
