Energy efficient home 'to be used as teaching tool'

A new seven-bedroom luxury home created with maximum
energy efficiency in mind will open its doors to schoolchildren as part of a project to teach young people about how eco-homes work.
The Yorkshire Post reported that David and Linda Walker are planning to construct the seven-bedroom luxury home for around £5 million.
Developed with the latest eco-friendly features, including solar heating, a waste water system and a reed bed natural filtration system, the site would also feature a separate study area away from the house where schoolchildren could come to see how energy is conserved on the property.
The proposals have been described by Kirklees Learning Services school improvement officer Dick Palfrey as "impressive".
He said: "This would form an ideal way of teaching young people about design features and their principles."
But first, Mr. Walker - who is a
builder - and his wife must get planning permission from councillors to use the site, which would not be permitted under normal circumstances, as the property would be located on greenbelt land.
South Yorkshire children were recently encouraged to design their eco-friendly dream home during an event held at Heeley City Farm.
