English rose named world's favourite

04/08/09
Gardeners looking to add a splash of colour to their borders this summer could find the perfect plant in what is now officially the world's favourite rose.

The Rosa Graham Thomas was voted the number one choice of the 41 national organisations that make up the World Federation of Rose Societies, Adam Pasco wrote on the Gardeners' World blog.

Introduced in 1983 by rosarian David Austin, the Graham Thomas - which is named after the late horticulturalist, gardening writer and rose enthusiast - was bred to combine the flower form, colour and scent of old roses with the repeat flowering and performance of newer varieties.

According to the Gardeners' World guide, the plant has a warm shade of deep yellow with a "rich, lingering tea-scent".

It can grow up to 1.5 metres high but can reach up to 2.4 metres if it is trained to an arch or pillar, Mr Pasco said.

"I grow it in a border close to the house, where I can admire it in full bloom from my kitchen window," he added.
