E.ON has followed big six rivals British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy by announcing a price cut - a move that increases the pressure on the three remaining major suppliers to follow suit, it has been claimed.
From March 31st, E.ON's gas prices will fall by six per cent. Around 1.9 million households are expected to benefit from the move, which will cut the supplier's annual average bill for dual fuel from £1,232 to £1,185, according to uSwitch.com.
With 2009's price reductions included, E.ON has now reduced its annual charges for gas and electricity by nine per cent, or £112. Scottish and Southern Energy's average bill has fallen by £97, while British Gas dual fuel is £170 a year cheaper.
"This is great news for consumers as the fact that three of the big six suppliers have reduced prices puts the remaining three under intense pressure to follow suit," said Ann Robinson, uSwitch.com's director of consumer policy.
Confused.com's Gareth Kloet added that residential property owners should use the latest round of price cuts as a "springboard" to shop around for the best deal on their energy tariff.
