Expert: 40% of emissions come from residential property

12/05/09
A spokesperson from the Energy Retail Association (ERA) has claimed almost half (40%) of carbon emissions come from homes.

The representative from the ERA said people can help cut their energy consumption and emissions through devices such as smart meters, so they know exactly how much energy they are using.

This week, the Department of Energy and Climate Change announced all homes in the UK will have smart meters installed by 2020, which the organisation said will give homeowners the opportunity to reduce the amount of energy they use.

It was also claimed people can use their smart meters to sell back the energy they produce from devices such as solar panels to the National Grid.

"If you have got a wind turbine or a solar panel and you produce more energy then you use, then you can be paid back for that by your energy company," the representative added.
