Expert: Insulate before you generate

13/03/09
Rob Bell of the Energy Saving Trust (EST) says that homeowners considering employing the latest green technologies should ensure that they get the basics right first.

The energy doctor advises homeowners that improving their property's insulation ought to be the first port of call, before contacting specialist tradesmen to install ground source heat pumps or other similar technologies.

He says that ground source heat pumps and other micro-generation technologies will provide savings in the future but "should only be considered after all other possible energy efficiency home improvements have been installed".

"It is vital to insulate before you generate - it will make the energy you do generate go that much further," he told About Property.

Mark Brinkley, the author of the Housebuilder's Bible, says that one of the problems with ground source heat pumps is that not many people have a garden big enough to accommodate them.
