Feed-in Tariffs offer 'revolution' in green home improvements

Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) to support the adoption of microgeneration technologies could spark a 'revolution' in green home improvements, according to one expert.

Nick Medic of RenewableUK said the scheme, which came into effect on 1st April, has made it simpler for residential property owners to benefit from using wind and solar energy systems.

"It enables anyone with a sufficient resource to get involved, so it's a revolutionary thing," he commented.

FITs guarantee a minimum monthly for the power generated using renewable sources, even if the home owner uses it all themselves. They can earn additional cash by exporting energy to the grid.

These financial incentives are in addition to the reductions in utility bills that are typically achieved by generating electricity on-site.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, FITs are available for solar panels, wind turbines, anaerobic digestion and hydroelectricity systems producing up to five megawatts.
