The introduction of the government's Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) will encourage more people to carry out green home improvements and the installation of more low carbon technology, an expert has said.
Gordon Millar, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said that he expects home owners to be "keen" on signing up to the scheme as it will not only cut their energy bills but also offers the potential for earning extra money.
Under the FITs initiative, individuals, businesses and organisations in England, Scotland and Wales will be paid money for every unit of electricity they generate, even if they use it themselves. They will also be paid for every unit that is exported back to the grid.
According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, a home with a solar photovoltaic panel installation generating 2.5kW could cut annual energy bills by £140, while earning home owners up to £900.
The FITs scheme is part of the government's drive to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent from their 1990 levels by 2050.
