Funding boost for low carbon communities

The government has announced 12 communities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are to receive up to £500,000 each to improve their energy efficiency and install green technologies such as solar panels and hydro turbines.

They are the second round of projects to be awarded funding under the Low Carbon Challenge, a two-year research programme designed to develop methods for cutting CO2 emissions that can be rolled out across the country.

Under the latest round of projects, the communities will work with builders and other local tradesmen to deliver green and renewable energy options that cut carbon while also saving money on energy bills.

Some of the communities could also earn cash by generating their own power under the government's new reward scheme, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said.

"This sort of action is vital because over a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions come from heating, lighting and powering electrical appliances in our homes," said energy and climate change minister Joan Ruddock.

The 12 new projects include sites in Oxfordshire, Cheshire, Ballymena in Northern Ireland, Cwmclydach in Wales and Exmoor National Park.
