Gardeners in Cumbria to 'do battle'

15/04/09
It has been reported that amateur gardeners in Cumbria can put on their gardening gloves and pit their wits against some of the country's top talent in May.

Leading experts and amateur enthusiasts will clash at Muncaster Castle in the Lake District on May 1st to be crowned Cumbria's Master Gardener.

Radio Four Gardener's Question Time host Eric Robson will chair the event and told the North-West Evening Mail that he hopes enthusiasts from around the county will "rise to the challenge and take on the professionals".

"There are lots of very talented amateur gardeners in Cumbria so this is their chance to show off their knowledge," he added.

Visitors to Muncaster's gardens who are not taking part in the competition could still find ideas for their own green space to pass on to their gardener.

The newspaper said the gardens are "absolutely spectacular" at this time of year, with the rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias sparking into colourful life.
