Government launches £10m Low Carbon Communities Challenge

28/09/09
Climate change minister Ed Miliband has launched the government's search for 20 local communities to pioneer low carbon home improvements as part of a £10 million pilot scheme.

Under the Low Carbon Communities Challenge, residential property owners will work with experts from a partnership of agencies including the Energy Saving Trust and the Carbon Trust to develop the ideas they think will help to cut CO2 emissions from the UK's housing stock.

The government will provide £10 million in funding to help communities pilot these low carbon solutions, with the successful schemes being rolled out across the country.

Mr Miliband said: "The challenge is an opportunity for communities to lead the way so that everyone can play their part in tackling climate change and saving money on fuel bills."

At present, around one-quarter of the UK's carbon emissions comes from residential property.

In July, housing minister John Healey said all new homes will have to be zero carbon from 2016.
