Government plans to cut red tape for builders

The government is to take "immediate action" to streamline the development consents regime in order to cut red tape for builders and promote economic growth.

Planning minister Bob Neill and business minister Mark Prisk made the announcement following a review of the system by British Land head of planning and environment Adrian Penfold.

In its response to his report, the government said it would look at ways to simplify the process for development consents and will commit to a "one in, one out" approach that means old regulations must be removed before new ones are introduced to ensure there is no increase in red tape for developers.

Government departments will also work more closely together to share best practice on the issue.

"It's important we help our businesses and not hinder them with unnecessary burdens, so they can continue to be competitive and invest in communities throughout the country," Mr. Neill said.

Responding to the announcement, the British Property Federation's associate director of special projects Michael Chambers said it was good news for both the building industry and the wider economy that the government has accepted the findings of Mr. Penfold's review.
