Households who call in the builders to make green home improvements such as installing solar panels or small wind turbines will soon be entitled to claim payments for generating low carbon electricity, the government has announced.
Energy and climate change minister Ed Miliband said from April 1st, residential property owners and communities will be able to claim the cash even if they use the energy themselves.
They will be able to get a further payment for any additional electricity they feed back into the grid, he added.
The scheme will apply to low carbon energy installations commissioned since July 2008.
A typical 2.5 kilowatt solar panel array could earn a reward of up to £900 a year, while also saving around £140 on annual electricity bills.
Mr. Miliband said: "The guarantee of getting an income on top of saving on energy bills will be an incentive to householders and communities wanting to make the move to low carbon living."
Last year, housing minister John Healey announced homes in the UK will have to be zero carbon from 2016.
