Government told it should spend more on renewable energy

13/05/09
The Renewable Energy Centre has said the state needs to reach into the public coffers and invest more in sustainable energy supplies.

Angela Gallacher, a spokesperson for the organisation, said the government is taking steps towards sustainable energy production, but it is moving "much too slowly" and does not appear to have a clear goal.

She stated the Budget was very green, but in reality the investment in wind, wave and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) is already "too little, too late and a much more committed policy needs to be enforced in order to protect this growing industry".

The British Wind Energy Association has also commented that the UK is behind other European countries when it comes to generating electricity from renewable sources.

Demand from the public for renewable energy generation in the home is there, however, as recent research for npower found 78% of people want to see an installation grant introduced to encourage them to invest in it.
