The government has announced the UK's "biggest ever" building programme for green houses at its eco-town projects in Hampshire, Cornwall, Norfolk and Oxfordshire.
Housing minister John Healey said the sites will share a £62.5 million funding pot to support builders in delivering over 600 new properties designed to the highest environmental standards.
When complete, the homes will introduce over 2,000 people to green technologies such as smart meters, electric car charging points and systems for saving and recycling water, he added.
The project is expected to create around 2,000 jobs for local tradesmen, including apprenticeships to help develop green building skills.
In addition to supporting the delivery of residential property, the funding will be used to support a range of community projects, green transport links, low carbon schools and the retrofitting of existing buildings to improve energy efficiency.
Commenting on the announcement, Kate Henderson of the Town and Country Planning Association said the funding is an "important step" towards achieving the ambitions of the eco-towns programme.
