GRaBS launches paper on climate change adaptation

16/06/09
A new expert paper on adapting urban homes and infrastructure to the "unavoidable" impact of climate change has been launched by the Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco Towns (GRaBS) project.

The paper, which was unveiled at the Greenbuild Expo in Manchester, argues that policy responses are needed from the international and European level to local levels to ensure communities are protected from the environmental, social and economic damage linked to climate change.

GRaBS, which is led by the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), believes green elements such as gardens, green roofs and productive landscapes, along with blue infrastructure like rivers, floodplains and sustainable drainage systems have a crucial role to play in adjusting to climate change.

The author of the expert paper and TCPA energy policy manager Kate Henderson said: "Through policy at all levels - international to local - there must be a clear consensus on the need for adaptation and climate change adaptation strategies must ensure decisive action."

Among the likely impacts of climate change are increased flooding and higher temperatures, GRaBS said.
