Green Deal gets cautious welcome from NHIC

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has given a cautious welcome to Conservative plans to provide loans worth up to £6,500 to improve the energy efficiency of existing housing.

NHIC director Andrew Leech said any initiative designed to enhance the green performance of the UK's residential property is "very worthwhile", but if elected, the Conservatives face a struggle to make their plan worl because of the "vast amount of money" it would require.

Under the Green Deal, every household would have the right to up to £6,500 in financing which they could use to have builders upgrade the green credentials of their home. The cost of carrying out the work would be paid back over 25 years using the money saved on energy bills.

Mr. Leech said the long-term nature of the repayments could put some home owners off the scheme, but if the loan is linked to a property, rather than an individual, houses could still be brought up to scratch and the finance would be passed on if an owner moved on.
