Green home improvement schemes 'facing cuts'

20/10/10

The government is reportedly set to cut funding for initiatives that support green home improvements such as installing renewables and improving insulation when it announces the comprehensive spending review later today (October 20th).

According to the Guardian, Feed-in Tariffs (FIT), which were launched in April to provide residential property owners with guaranteed monthly payments for generating electricity from sources such as wind and solar, will be reduced by ten per cent.

This is despite evidence the scheme has been a hit with households. Last month, BusinessGreen said analysis of government figures by Ownergy had found installations of electricity systems qualifying for FITs had almost doubled between July and August to reach 3,905.

Elsewhere, one source told the newspaper that the Warm Front scheme, which provides funds energy efficiency and insulation upgrades for families on certain benefits, will be "slashed pretty bad".

Under the current programme, qualifying households in England receive improvements worth up to £3,500. This is extended to £6,000 in cases where assessors recommend the installation of oil, low-carbon or renewable technologies.
