Green home improvements 'must be hugely appealing to public'

The government, builders and designers have to work together to make the prospect of having home improvements carried out through the Green Deal "hugely appealing" to residential property owners.

This is according to Kevin McCloud of Channel 4's Grand Designs, who said one of the key challenges for the scheme, which is set to start in 2012, will be persuading the public of the need to make their house more energy efficient.

As large-scale retrofitting work can be intrusive and disruptive, he said architects, surveyors and installers should work with communities to establish local renovation schemes for a street or group of streets to spread out the upgrades.

"You have got a contractor working in that area for an extensive period of time and you slowly retrofit your house over two or three years rather than having a big blast, which would be enormously disruptive," Mr. McCloud commented.

According to energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne, the Green Deal could support around 250,000 jobs over the next 20 years if all of the UK's 26 million households take part.
