Green house basics make a "huge difference"

Lord Adair Turner "put the cart before the horse" when he said it could cost between £10,000 and £15,000 to improve the environmental performance of a
residential property, as there are many basic steps that can make a "huge difference" at a fraction of this cost.
According to Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, the comments by the chairman of the government's Committee on Climate Change could actually dissuade people from carrying out green
home improvements by making them appear prohibitively expensive.
Lord Turner said there needs to be a "whole house approach" to improving
energy efficiency and environmental performance, with people given a total report on what work they need to do on their homes. This could cost between £10,000 and £15,000.
However, Mr. Miller said many home owners still need to lay the foundations of eco-homes by getting qualified
local tradesmen to upgrade their insulation or fit energy efficient boilers, all of which cost much less than Lord Turner's figure.
"Let's not put the cart before the horse lest we dissuade people from acting at all because they feel it's not worth bothering," he added.
