Green houses get green light in South Shields

Builders in south Tyneside are set to get to work on the construction of 20 eco-friendly properties after the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) gave the green light to funding for the scheme.

The government's regeneration body has pledged £803,000 towards the £2 million costs of building the two-bedroom bungalows in the Horsley Hill area of South Shields.

South Tyneside Council had already earmarked around £1 million in funding for the project.

Builder Frank Haslam Milan will deliver the properties, which will incorporate energy efficiency measures to reduce fuel costs and will have lower carbon emissions compared to comparable standard housing.

Once complete, the bungalows will be targeted at the over-60s and others who need single-level accommodation.

HCA head of area Brian Peel said: "The new homes will be ideal for downsizers who want a smaller home in their own community and will also free up larger houses for local families."

In related news, the agency recently announced that its partner builders had started 64,811 houses in England during the 12 months to March, beating a target of 53,315.

Contractors also completed 56,118 dwellings against a benchmark of 52,325.
