The Green Party offers the "most ambitious" manifesto for improving the
energy efficiency of
residential property in the UK, according to Friends of the Earth.
Martyn Williams, the charity's parliamentary spokesman, praised its proposals for focusing on reducing fuel poverty and ensuring insulation is improved in existing homes.
Under the Green manifesto, £2 billion would be invested each year in incentives to carry out green
home improvements, with the party aiming to create 40,000 jobs for
builders and engineers in the installation industries.
It is also proposing a free home insulation programme that would give priority to pensions and those living in fuel poverty.
The scheme, which would aim to upgrade four million homes annually, would create around 80,000 jobs, the party claimed.
Mr. Williams said that manifesto is laudable as cutting emissions in the home is the "quickest and cheapest" option for reducing CO2 output, as well as being one of the most popular as it makes properties "more comfortable" to live in.
