Hips 'reduce residential property carbon emissions'

Energy efficiency could have improved among the residential property stock after it was revealed that 65 per cent of consumers believe Home Information Packs (Hips) to be useful.

A survey by the Association of Home Information Pack Providers (Ahipp) showed 85 per cent of people were not influenced by the need to obtain a Hip when considering whether or not to sell their home.

Mike Ockenden, director-general of Ahipp, said 30 per cent of sellers and buyers have implemented one of the recommendations laid out in an energy performance certificate.

"That to me says that Hips are actually helping to reduce carbon emissions," he stated.

Mr Ockenden also commented on recent claims in the Telegraph by the Conservatives, which said Hips are costing consumers millions of pounds. He said some of the benefits of Hips were being disregarded by the party.

It was also claimed in the newspaper that Hips have raised £94 million for government coffers.
