Home improvement body launches search for Britain's Oldest Boiler

Edited by Andy Jowett.

The search is underway for the owner of Britain's Oldest Boiler.

Under the initiative launched by the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) and the npower hometeam, the winner will receive £3,000 to help them replace their old unit with an A-rated model that will improve the energy efficiency of their property.

Richard Cotton, head of sales for npower hometeam, said: "If your boiler is particularly old - perhaps the same age as your grown-up children, or has been in the house longer than you have been married - you could be the owner of Britain's Oldest Boiler."

According to the Energy Saving Trust, residential property owners should consider having a plumber replace their heating and hot water unit every 15 years.

Replacing a G-rated boiler with a new A-rated condensing model, when combined with upgraded heating controls, can save up to £235 a year on household bills, it added.

Home owners can further reduce energy waste and fuel costs by fitting their hot water tank with a jacket and properly insulating visible pipes.
