Home improvements 'should focus on energy efficiency'

Going green should be at the forefront of home owners' minds when they look to upgrade their residential property, it has been claimed.

National Home Improvement Council director Andrew Leech said that while it is natural for households to want a "superb" bathroom or kitchen, investing in enhancing the energy efficiency of a house will provide the biggest boost to its value in the future.

His comments come after a survey by housing charity Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects found that 73 per cent of Britons have a dream home improvement project in mind.

Some 12 per cent of respondents said that enhancing the environmental performance of their property was the main reason they wanted to carry out the work - a figure Mr. Leech described as "staggeringly low".

To improve the figure, he said that home owners should think about incorporating eco-friendly measures in standard projects, such as installing more efficient showers and baths when renovating a bathroom.
