Home owners 'embracing Feed-in Tariffs'

Residential property owners are embracing the government's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme in ever-growing numbers, according to one expert.

Renewable Energy Association technical director Stuart Pocock said the initiative is off to "a good start" after figures from Ofgem showed the number of solar panel installations eligible for FIT payments hit a record high in August.

In total, 2,257 houses had the energy generating cells fitted last month, compared with 1,700 in July and 1,400 in June.

Since the FIT scheme went live on April 1st, over 6,688 properties have had solar panels installed.

Under the initiative, home owners receive a guaranteed monthly payment for the power they generate from these sustainable sources, even if they consume it all themselves.

FITs also cover mounted or free-standing wind turbines, anaerobic digestion systems and micro combined heat and power installations producing up to five megawatts of electricity.

Mr. Pocock said it is promising that the number of households signing up for solar panels is not racing ahead of the supply chain's capacity to support their adoption, as this will help to avoid a "boom-bust scenario" and ensure a sustainable take-up of green energy.
