Home owners 'must take carbon monoxide seriously'

Residential property owners have been reminded to take the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning "very seriously" when looking for someone to install or maintain a gas appliance.

Richard Clarke, chairman of plumber and heating engineering specialist 1st Action, made the comments after a poll by the firm found 28 per cent of households would have their boiler serviced by the tradesman offering the lowest price, regardless of whether or not they were qualified to do the work.

He stated that carbon monoxide poisoning can present a "tremendous danger" to families, so it is vital that individuals do not cut corners where gas is concerned.

"You can't smell it, you can't see it and you can't know it's there, but it can kill you. It's as simple as that," Mr. Clarke warned.

The 1st Action research comes after a survey by the Gas Safe Register found 31 per cent of people would try to fix a gas boiler or fire themselves in an attempt to save money.

However, it is a legal requirement that anyone who works on gas appliances in the UK, the Isle of Man and Guernsey is a member of the register.
