The severe winter experienced by the UK has increased home owners' debt to energy suppliers, with the total now standing at £728 million.

According to figures from comparison service uSwitch.com, some 21 per cent of households - or 5.5 million families - owe money to their gas and electricity provider.

The typical debt is £132, up five per cent on 2009 and 16 per cent higher than the average debt of £114 recorded in 2008.

Since the start of the year, four of the UK's big six energy suppliers - E.ON, British Gas, Scottish and Southern Energy and npower - have announced price cuts but so far, these have only come into force for British Gas customers.

Most recently, npower said that around two million homes would benefit from a seven per cent reduction in gas costs from March 26th.

Calculations from uSwitch.com said that while all the publicised price cuts are implemented, the average annual household energy bill will be £1,209 - 33 per cent higher than it was in 2008.
