Homes to receive £2.6m in flood defence funding

Edited by Bob Witham.

Over 500 properties in areas at high risk of flooding will receive home improvements designed to protect against rising waters as part of a new £2.6 million investment package.

The funding, which was announced by environment minister Huw Irranca-Davies, is the second phase of the government's £5.5 million grant scheme introduced in response to Sir Michael Pitt's report on the 2007 floods.

It will pay for builders to deliver air brick covers, storm porches and door guards to a total of 532 households.

According to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, around 490,000 properties in England face a significant risk of river or coastal flooding.

Under the latest scheme, local authorities will be responsible for delivering flood protection measures to ensure they are tailored to the needs of a particular community.

"In the future, we must be prepared for more extreme weather on all levels," Mr. Irranca-Davies said.

Last month, the Environment Agency announced it would sign up an additional 500,000 residential property and business owners to its free flood warning service in response to the Pitt Review's recommendations.
