Builders in England started work on 90,320 homes during the 2008-09 financial year, according to official figures.

This is the lowest number on record for available figures, which go back to 1990-91.

According to the Department for Communities and Local Government, there were 71,160 private properties started in 2008-09, almost 50 per cent lower than the 140,420 private housing starts registered during 2007-08.

However, the number of homes started by registered social landlords increased over the same period, rising from 15,810 in 2007-08 to 18,850 in 2008-09.

Residential property completions in England stood at 133,830 for the financial year, down from 168,140 completions in the previous 12 months.

Private homes made up the lion's share of the homes, accounting for 107,710 units, down from 144,750 completions the year before.

According to the National House-Building Council, 2009 saw builders register the lowest number of housing starts since its records began in the 1950s at 88,803 units, down 18 per cent on 2008.
