Housing emissions rose 3.2% in 2008

The UK's emissions of carbon dioxide fell by around two per cent in 2008, but output of the greenhouse gas from residential property rose by 3.2 per cent, according to new government figures.

Data published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change show estimated net CO2 emissions stood at 532.8 million tonnes during the year, down from 543.6 million tonnes in 2007.

However, carbon output from the UK's housing rose by 2.5 million tonnes.

Green Building magazine editor Keith Hall said it was "hard to believe" that after altering the Building Regulations to improve energy efficiency, the government introducing loft insulation schemes across the country and there being just six years until its deadline for housing to be zero carbon, emission from residential property had still increased.

"Clearly, far, far more needs to be done if we are to make the cuts in CO2 emissions from housing which are needed - and fast," he said.
