Huhne unveils Green Deal details

Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has unveiled details of the government's proposed Green Deal, which aims to deliver energy-saving
home improvements to every household in the country.
The scheme would be carried out in three steps.
First, a
residential property would be given an independent energy assessment to identify the most effective ways of improving its environmental performance.
Households would then be able to use a loan of up to £6,500 from approved Green Deal lenders to have qualified
local tradesmen carry out the necessary upgrades.
Finally, the debt would be paid off over the long term through savings on energy bills.
Mr. Huhne said the scheme would create around 100,000 insulation jobs for
builders by 2015.
"At a time of increasing gas prices,
energy efficiency is a no-brainer," he commented.
Subject to parliamentary approval, the Green Deal should get underway in autumn 2012.
In related news, Kevin McCloud of Channel 4's Grand Designs recently said the success of the planned scheme will depend on making its energy and money-saving benefits "hugely appealing" to the public.
