Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has been urged to "stand firm" against any Treasury attempt to cut the government's Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) scheme.
Friends of the Earth said the initiative, which allows
residential property owners and businesses to earn a guaranteed monthly payment for generating electricity from renewable sources like wind turbines or solar panels, is creating a "green energy revolution".
Concerns were raised about the future of FITs last week when energy minister Charles Hendry said the coalition had inherited some "extremely generous" schemes from the previous government but it was "not absolutely clear" how they would be paid for.
However, Friends of the Earth policy and campaigns director Craig Bennett said: "It's absurd that the Treasury is even reviewing Feed-in Tariff payments because the scheme isn't financed by taxpayers and there is already a planned review in two years' time."
BusinessGreen recently reported figures from Ownergy showing there were 3,905 installations of environmentally-friendly electricity systems qualifying for FIT payments in August, nearly double the number recorded during July.
