Inefficient boilers 'could be replaced under Green Deal'

Residential property owners might be able to replace inefficient G-rated boilers with new models under the government's planned Green Deal, a minister has said.

Responding to a written parliamentary question from Glasgow North East MP William Bain, Greg Barker of the Department of Energy and Climate Change said such home improvements would be permitted if "the savings made over the product's life cover the upfront cost".

A G-rated boiler is defined as having a seasonal efficiency rate of less than 70 per cent.

The minister pointed out that changes to the Building Regulations have already helped to eliminate the installation of these units in new properties, as since October the minimum efficiency standard for boilers has been 90 per cent.

Mr. Barker claimed the "clear message" this sends out means the government is confident there will be "virtually no G-rated boilers by 2020".

Under the proposed Green Deal, individuals will be able to borrow up to £6,500 to carry out energy-saving home improvements.
