Insulation 'an easy way to go green'

Having builders install loft insulation is "one of the easiest ways" to save heat and cut household bills, Which? has said.

To mark Energy Saving Week, the consumer body has offered some tips on cutting fuel consumption while keeping warm during the winter.

It said having local tradesmen fit lagging at least 270 mm thick in roof spaces can save up to £145 on annual heating bills.

Adding cavity or solid wall insulation will help a residential property to retain more heat and further reduce fuel costs.

Which? said home owners can make a number of other simple changes to cut their electricity use, such as switching to energy-saving light bulbs, which could save up to £45 over their lifetime compared to standard bulbs.

In its "Ten Big Changes" guide for green houses, which was published earlier this year, the consumer body encouraged households to take on more ambitious changes.

It said gardeners could reduce their carbon footprint by growing fruit and veg at home or in an allotment.

The organisation also encouraged home owners to only use eco-friendly cleaning products and to reuse or recycle furniture and appliances.

Energy Saving Week runs until October 31st.
