Landscaping project creates community garden

15/10/09
A landscaping project has led to the creation of a new community garden in Dovercourt, reports the Harwich and Manningtree Standard.

The publication notes the work, which transformed a disused patch of land from a grassy area to a community garden.

Landscaping on the site added raised beds, along with a central pergola.

As well as providing a centrepiece for the newly named Elizabeth Road Peace Garden, it is claimed that the feature is to help less mobile visitors to become involved in the maintenance of the site.

During the official opening of the garden, however, it was the younger locals who took the more hands-on approach.

While the adults chatted over a cup of tea, local schoolchildren were put to work planting the flowerbeds.

Home owners keen to undertake some landscaping of their own could take into account the advice of Chris Crowder, head gardener at Levens Hall.

Writing for the Lancashire Telegraph, the gardener gave tips including the suggestion of spiking compacted areas of soil with a fork to help break them up.
