Localism drive will improve social housing, says minister.

The government's localism agenda will improve the regulation of social housing and deliver better residential property for residents, it has been claimed.

Housing minister Grant Shapps said in light of the scrapping of the Tenant Services Authority, which is being culled as part of the coalition's "bonfire of the quangos", people living in local authority accommodation will be given stronger powers over their homes.

"Consumer protection is going local - tenants will now be able to hold landlords to account with the help of their local representatives and through panels that they set up and control themselves," he added.

Mr. Shapps also announced that an independent committee will also be set up within the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to handle the economic regulation of social housing.

The HCA is facing substantial reform following a Cabinet Office review of non-departmental public bodies.

It will be given a smaller "enabling role" as an investment agency and its powers in London will be transferred to the capital's mayor.
