London mayor launches carbon makeover scheme

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has launched a new trial scheme to carry out "carbon makeovers" to around 10,000 homes in the capital.

The initiative will offer residents energy-saving lightbulbs, as well as giving them the chance to have qualified local tradesmen install cavity and loft insulation at either a subsidised rate or free of charge if they are on qualifying benefits.

Nine London boroughs - Croydon, Camden, Lewisham, Harrow, Havering, Haringey, Hillingdon, Kingston and Southwark - are taking part in the trials. The mayor and the London Development Agency (LDA) have committed £9.5 million to kick-start the programme.

Subject to further funding, the scheme will eventually be extended to the whole of London and will aim to deliver between 200,000 and 500,000 carbon makeovers by 2012 and 1.2 million upgrades by 2015.

By then, the energy efficiency measures carried out under the programme could save 350,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Mayor Johnson said: "London is crying out for a much more simple, easy to access scheme to help people go green and these trials will help us create this."

In related news, the LDA's East London Green Grid, a network of 300 green infrastructure projects, recently won the Best Future Landscape award at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona.
