More support needed for green home improvements, says expert.

Ministers need to "put their money where their mouth is" on energy efficiency, as many residential property owners still find green home improvements prohibitively expensive.

Duncan Hayes, editor of Built It magazine, said while schemes like the boiler scrappage scheme are to be applauded, they "never go far enough and the money never lasts long".

The scrappage initiative, which was launched in January, will provide vouchers worth £400 to 125,000 households in England to help then pay for plumbers to replace G-rated boilers with modern models.

Mr. Hayes said more ambitious incentives and subsidies are needed, as while there is an appetite among home owners to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance, the long-term nature of savings on bills is not a big enough motivator to make the upfront investment.

"If [ministers] were really serious about doing it I think they would put their money where their mouth is and give people money off," he added.
