National Trust champions pond life

According to the National Trust, there is no better way for a
gardener to create a "wildlife haven" than through a pond.
The charity says a water feature edged with rushes can create a "microsite" of the best the countryside has to offer.
It adds: "These beautiful additions to any land provide homes for some of our most important indigenous wildlife, plants, insects, fish, amphibians, birds and even mammals."
In a new book titled Creating and Maintaining a Wildlife Pond by expert Chris McClaren, it is suggested a new pond creates visual appeal, is easy to maintain and is child-friendly.
The guide could teach amateur and professional
gardeners all they need to know about creating and maintaining their own pond.
Meanwhile, a recent Royal Horticultural Society research paper studying 1,000
gardeners found 71% had installed a water butt in the last two years - which may not create a wildlife haven, but can help to preserve precious resources.
