Newham goes green with refurbishments

Newham Homes, the arms-length management organisation (Almo) for the London Borough of Newham, is bringing green technology to its properties as part of a £372 million refurbishment scheme.
The project aims to upgrade the council's three-storey townhouses beyond the requirements of the government's Decent Homes benchmark to the Modern Homes standard.
As part of the Almo's plans, selected properties will have their existing heating systems replaced with solar thermal domestic hot water systems by Baxi Solarflo.
Newham Homes said the move, which includes the installation of in-roof flat plate solar collectors, will help to increase
energy efficiency, tackle fuel poverty and cut CO2 emissions.
Les Hayward, the organisation's lead design consultant, commented: "We will be monitoring the impact on our residents' energy consumption and therefore the reduction in fuel bills and fuel poverty."
According the Energy Saving Trust, home owners could cut their own bills by replacing boilers that are more than 15 years old and ensuring hot water pipes are properly insulated.
The organisation said replacing an old boiler can reduce heating costs by as much as one-third.
