NHIC welcomes renewable energy rewards

Government plans to offer financial incentives to residential property owners who install low carbon energy systems such as solar panels and wind turbines have been backed by the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC).

Energy and climate change minister Ed Miliband announced this week that from April 1st, households and communities will be able to claim the payments for generating renewable energy, even if they use it themselves.

Home owners with a solar panel installation generating 2.5 kilowatts could earn up to £900 a year in rewards, as well as cutting their annual electricity bill by £140.

NHIC director Andrew Leech said the scheme will "certainly" encourage more people to look at having builders install green technologies - and more incentives could be on the way.

However, Mr. Leech added that the government and industry groups need to do more to educate the public about the environmental and financial benefits of renewables.

"Everybody has got to learn that message because it is so important for the planet and for people's pockets as well," he said.
