The National Landlords Association (NLA) has welcomed the government's planned Green Deal.
Responding to energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne's unveiling of the proposed programme, NLA chairman David Salusbury said the organisation would like to see further details, but the outline looks promising for those renting out
residential property.
Under the planned Green Deal, Mr. Huhne said homes will be given an independent energy assessment before owners are allowed to borrow up to £6,500 to carry out recommended
home improvements.
The money will be paid back over the long term through the resulting savings in household bills, the minister added.
Mr. Salusbury said this could create an "innovative new avenue" to help landlords invest in warmer, greener houses that will simultaneously cut costs for tenants and contribute to the fight against climate change.
"We look forward to working with the Department for Energy and Climate Change over the coming months to ensure the Green Deal encourages and assists landlords in improving the
energy efficiency of their properties," he added.
Draft legislation to establish the Green Deal will be laid before parliament next month.
